The R4 DS media cartridge is an unofficial device made by R4 that allows Nintendo's DS console to be used as a hand-held media library for videos, MP3 music files and home-brew (fan-made) software and emulators. The cartridge works by using a MicroSD card for storage, which can be inserted into a PC using an SD card reader included with the device. The cartridge is compatible with all MicroSD cards, so if you can easily upgrade your R4 to a 4 GB MicroSD card.
Download the firmware for the R4 card (see Resources). Double-click the downloaded file to unzip.
Step 2
Connect your 4GB MicroSD card to the USB port of your computer using the MicroSD adapter supplied with the R4 card.

Copy all files and folders from the unzipped firmware folder to the root directory of the MicroSD card, then eject and remove the card.
Step 4
Insert the MicroSD card into the slot on the back of your R4 cartridge. Ensure that the MicroSD card is inserted correctly, with the key-shaped indentations on the left side of the card.
Step 5
Insert the R4 cartridge into the top slot of your Nintendo DS. Turn the system on to complete the firmware update. Your R4 cartridge is now ready for use with the new 4GB storage unit.
